I generally use the Available or Not Available category when thinking about acquisition of print monograph materials. For particular entities, the items are In Stock or Not in Stock. Not in Stock breaks down into Available from another source or not available. I've thought for a long time that BIP was not a useful resource. Online it does add online and so-called OP vendors. But it is my understanding that OP online vendors are adding new titles to their databases as well as other "in print" titles. I agree Out of Print or In Print are no longer useful categories. If an item is not available, we may want a dealer to be on the look out for it....Desiderata lists come to mind----a truly out of print approach.

Subject: [ACQNET-L] Is there a better name for the out-of-print book market?

As part of the special issue of Against the Grain on the out-of-print book market, I'm sponsoring a contest to see if anyone can come up with a better name to describe its much broader scope.

Here is the current term and some possibilities along with the objections:

Out-of-print-many of the items are still in print
Used-many of the items are new
Secondary-some publishers sell their items directly

If you have any thoughts on the matter or any new suggestions, would you send them to me off-list at aa3805_at_wayne.edu<mailto:aa3805_at_wayne.edu> ?

I'll publish any or all of the comments that I receive. If I edit your response, you'll have a chance to review the final version.

Thanks.

Bob
