John, and others,

I am the Acquisitions Assistant at North Central College. What I do is post a monthly list on the library's blog. I choose 20-25 of the most eye-catching titles and list those. I try to choose titles from diverse disciplines to appeal to everyone. I then make a link to the online card catalog and remind the patrons to check back often, as our catalog is consistently being updated as new items are being added.

Also, our Cataloging Assistant highlights newly acquired items by displaying the actual books on a shelf in the stacks. This section includes a sign mentioning that these are new acquisitions, and she makes sure that the temporary status mentions the specific location of the item.

She also sends out emails to the professors and department heads who requested the item be purchased, and any departments that she feels it may be of interest to or relevant for when the items are processed and available for use.

Hope this helps!

Good afternoon everyone,

As the Acquisitions Librarian I am responsible for alerting our patrons
about new materials (in this case, books) which we purchase and are new
to the library. We are currently using III for our OPAC and are using a
"create list" method. This creates a list of recently cataloged items
and places a link to them on our web page. It is not the best method,
and I am looking for different ways to get the news out to the patrons.

I am curious to see what everyone else is doing to get word out on the
new items in your library.

Thanks in advance for everyone's help!

John
