Lehigh University uses Dewey to classify our library books. We wish to
explore the OCLC Cataloging Partners program (formerly known as
PromptCat). Our primary book vendor identified 2 Dewey libraries, but
when contacted several times, these folks failed to respond, so now I am
approaching a wider audience.
I'd like to hear from any Dewey library, preferably academic, about
experiences with this program, particularly ...
1) How did you begin using this program, and how long have you been
involved with it?
2) Did you run a pilot project by selecting a discrete subject area
(e.g. 370s education) or a certain type of material (e.g. monographic
series) to begin? Have you broadened your coverage since you started?
3) Do you use it with firm orders, approvals, or both?
4) Do you consider your participation a success? Do you feel that you
have sacrificed quality as a means of dealing with shrinking staff or
cataloging backlogs? Any problems? Are you saving money?
5) How much checking do you do with the bib records that have gone
though this process? Any accidental call number duplication?
Anything you can pass along would certainly be helpful to us as we
consider participating in the OCLC Cataloging Partners program. Thanks!
