The science libraries include the Kline Science Library, Sterling 
Chemistry Library,

General Purpose

Reporting to the Director of Sciences Libraries and Information 
Services, this
position serves as the Head of Technical Services for the distributed 
Science
Libraries, works in the Science Libraries as a member of a team providing
information services in a distributed, innovative, and technically 
sophisticated
environment utilizing the Yale University Online Catalog (Orbis), 
various local and
remote information databases (e.g. Ovid, and OCLC), and a superb historical
paper-based collection.


Responsibilities

Manages and coordinates the distributed science libraries' technical 
services
operations (acquisitions, cataloging, serial maintenance, binding, 
preservation),
including direct supervision and training of 3 FTE library assistants 
and student
assistants.  Manages the flow of materials between libraries; works 
closely with the
Chief Acquisitions Librarian and the Chief Catalog Librarian and other 
designated
staff in the development and implementation of library-wide standards 
and procedures
to support technical services for the science libraries.   Participates 
in the
development of library-wide policies, procedures, and best practices 
relating to
acquisitions, cataloging and metadata creation that support the 
bibliographic
control and access to print and digital materials.  Produces reports 
related to
technical services for quality control, collection development/analysis, 
etc., from
the Library's integrated library system.  Participates in providing a 
program of
services including user education, online searching, and liaison work to
Departments.  Provides coverage for reference/education services via 
online tools
and the Reference Desk.  Serves on appropriate library committees and 
pursues
professional development activities, and is expected to be 
professionally active at
Yale and nationally.  May be required to participate in disaster 
recovery efforts.
May be assigned to work on the West Campus in West Haven, Connecticut.


Qualifications

Master's degree from ALA-accredited program or equivalent experience; 
experience
with acquisitions and/or cataloging operations; familiarity with general
bibliographic control principles, including controlled vocabularies and 
authority
control; familiarity with reference service; familiarity with SQL and 
Microsoft
Access Databases. Appointment at the Librarian II level requires a 
minimum of two
years of professional experience and demonstrated professional 
accomplishment.
Appointment at the Librarian III level requires a minimum of 5 years of 
professional
experience and professional accomplishment.   Excellent oral and written
communication skills; excellent analytical and problem solving skills; 
an ability to
work collegially and collaboratively with diverse populations in small 
group and
team environments; ability to meet deadlines, set priorities and handle 
multiple
priorities; and an interest in keeping abreast of new developments in 
information
technology and services for the sciences.  Preferred: supervisory 
experience;
experience with automated acquisitions and cataloging systems; educational
background in the sciences; commitment to public service in a science 
library
environment; and familiarity with current cataloging practices and national
cataloging standards, working knowledge of MARC21 bibliographic and holdings
standards.
