Collection
Development Librarian
Scarborough-Phillips Library, St. Edward's University
Scope
The collection development librarian is responsible for developing a
collection
development policy that values a balanced collection in all areas of
the
curriculum and for all bibliographic and physical formats, including
digital.
The successful candidate will have the knowledge and experience to
assess the
collection. Working with library faculty and staff, and teaching
faculty, he or
she will possess the leadership and management skills to develop new
collection
policy and to successfully implement that policy. This is a full-time,
tenure-track faculty position and reports directly to the Library
Director.
Salary and rank commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Responsibilities
- Assists
the Library Director in overall collection management, development, and
assessment; assumes responsibility for building a current, balanced
collection, especially for general and multidisciplinary curricular
needs.
- Works
with Library Faculty to manage and develop the library's collections;
- Trains
Library Faculty on collection management tools and methods;
- Serves
as a professional resource for collection assessment and management
issues;
- Works
closely with the Library Faculty and the Academic Departments and
Programs to establish and execute ongoing collection review.
- Establishes,
monitors, and tracks collection budget of approximately $500,000.
Recommends priorities for the distribution of collection funds.
- Establishes
collection management policies and procedures, and oversees
implementation of said policies and procedures in consultation with the
Library Director and the Library Faculty.
- Reviews
and analyzes collections.
- Coordinates
collection statistics;
- Conducts
collection evaluation programs to assess strengths and weaknesses in
all subject areas.
- Keeps
current on new collection development and acquisitions technology.
Participates in local, regional and national professional activities as
deemed appropriate.
- Organizes
and conducts collection management projects including weeding and
gifts; ensures that written acknowledgements of gifts are promptly
dispatched.
- Establishes,
maintains and reviews relationships with vendors and publishers.
- Establishes
systems for review of materials in need of repair, replacement or
withdrawal.
- Serves
on reference desk and participates in the library instruction program,
including some nights and weekends.
Qualifications
Required:
- ALA-accredited
masters degree in library or information science or foreign equivalent.
- A
clear understanding of the disciplines that constitute the liberal arts
as well as demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging trends,
issues, and best practices in academic library collection development,
scholarly communications, and assessment.
- Two
to three years of experience in an academic library performing
collection management and /or acquisitions, with knowledge of trends
and practices in information access, acquisitions and collection
development.
- Experience
with staff-side functions of a major integrated library system.
- Experience
with budgeting in a library setting.
- Highly
proficient with Excel, Access or other spreadsheet software
- Excellent
oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills and the ability
to display imagination, ingenuity, and humor in solving problems and
working with people.
- Successful
completion of an employment and criminal history background check
required.
Preferred:
- Experience
with electronic management systems like Serials Solutions, Ebsco A to
Z, etc. and the use of their report functions to gather and distribute
use statistics, report coverage overlap, etc.
- Experience
with analysis of patron use of library collections, including all
physical and bibliographic formats
- Experience
with evaluation and withdrawal of traditional print materials
- Experience
with or knowledge of licensing electronic resources and copyright
issues.
- Experience
working with library material vendors
- Experience
with III Millennium
- Professional
experience in a liberal arts environment
