Subject: Questions about collecting local content
I am a MLIS student in the School of Information Management at Dalhousie
University in Halifax, Canada. I am doing research for a class I am taking on
Collections Management, and I was wondering if you would help me out by sharing
some of your expertise and experience. My topic is collecting local content
for the library, such as books by local authors, CD's by local artists, and
DVD's by local filmmakers. The focus is on those cultural products that are
not distributed or published by large companies and so require a different
approach for collecting than other items in the collection. I will compile the
responses I receive and distribute them back to the listserv. If you collect
local content for your library, I would appreciate you taking a few minutes to
answer any or all of the following questions:
Does your library collect local content, and if so, what types and how do you
define "local"?
Why do you think it is important for libraries to have local content in their
collections?
How do you go about finding and acquiring local content? Are there specific
publications or websites that you look to?
Are there any key issues you would identify around collecting local content or
challenges you've encountered?
What type of library do you work for, what is your role there, and are you
responsible for collecting in a specific subject?
Thank you very much for your assistance.
Sincerely,
Amanda
