We recently started purchasing ebooks on a title-by-title basic from
Blackwell Book Services. These are actually books on the ebrary platform.
We can use Blackwell's Collection Manager online order system. We are
invoiced and make payments in much the same way as print books. It did,
however, require a little bit of effort to work out all the configuration
and procedures for this. It does build our ebrary collection slowly.
I'm not sure there is really a critical mass of books there to make it
worthwhile to the users. If we had enough money available right now,
I would buy or lease a larger collection.

Subject: Survey of E-book providers

Dear colleagues,

The EPFL Central Library is catering for the needs of the EPFL, one of
Europe's leading technical universities. E-books have been part of our
services since more than two years, acquired in the form of big
"packages" directly from publishers (Elsevier, Wiley, SpringerLink,
etc.)

What is currently missing is a way for us to efficiently purchase
selected titles in electronic format. Most editor-owned databases don't
allow us to easily add a single title to our subscribed content.

We are therefore currently reviewing several e-book management tools
(EBL, Echo, MyiLibrary, Knovel, NetLibrary) that could enable us to
purchase e-books on a single title basis.

I wanted to know if there was any other academic library facing the same
task. We would be eager to share our knowledge and profit from the
experience of other libraries around the world. If you are in a similar
situation or interested in sharing your knowledge on these matters, you
can contact me directly at thomas.guignard_at_epfl.ch

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards,
