Subject: Question -- thoughts on APA Style Guide to Electronic References

Hi,
I'm wondering how you all are responding to the APA Style Guide to
Electronic References.

I've received ordering information to order a PDF edition from which I
can print a limited number of
print copies for our library ($11.95), or to order a PDF that we can
host locally and provide electronically
to authorized users (sliding cost based on FTE, our cost would be $425.)

I have a couple of questions & I wondered how other people have answered
them.

1. APA says that ILL is not allowed with either version. We try to
avoid ILL restriction and I know it is common
with e-books but it isn't so common with print books. Also, the license
for the electronic edition says we are
supposed to prevent Walk-Ins from printing the document. I can't
imagine how we would do this, plus it seems
mean since walk-ins can use the xerox machines.

2. How necessary is the electronic edition? Is it worth the money?
I've already found libraries that have posted
their own versions of instructions and examples based on the 2007 APA
Style Guide to Electronic References, won't
tudents quickly go to such guides rather than to the APA's probably less
student-oriented examples? We direct them
to library-created guides for overall APA style questions.

Some of our Reference Librarians are asking for the electronic edition,
and librarians in my department are worrying
bout buying something that we have to host locally, and overpaying for
what is just a supplement, and license terms,
and things like that.

Thanks,
Fran
