Subject: Management of Gifts Books

Dear Colleagues,
We are taking a close look at our policy on accepting gift books for our
general collections. Most ARL libraries state publicly that they
welcome gift books, but accept them only with certain restrictions. We
are especially interested in gaining more control over the intake of
gift books. In a perfect world, we would like for the number of gift
books accepted to be the same as the number added to the collection, but
recognize that this is very idealistic.

We are looking for ideas and experience about how to refine our gift
policies to get a greater return on our investment of staff resources.
Have you found ways to communicate to potential donors that only certain
kinds of materials are needed? How much are selectors involved in
screening of potential collections? How do you avoid taking in
collections of retiring faculty most of which will be duplicates to the
library collection? Have you recently stopped holding book sales?

Thank you for any advice and wisdom gained through experience that you
can share.
Best Regards
Janet
