Subject: Work flow with shelf-ready books
Hello,
Our library is considering outsourcing physical processing services for
books we
purchase from major vendors. We already receive MaRC records for these
books and now
we wish to receive them shelf ready with barcode labels, author/title
labels, spine labels, tattle tape
and property stamps. We realize that this will require a change in our
workflow, but are not quite
sure what the new workflow should be. At present we work as follows:
submit orders on the vendor's
website, receive MaRC records from the vendor for the orders the
following day, upload the MaRC records
and create order records in our library system, receive the books
and note arrivals, cataloging and
classification editing and quality check, physical processing (labels,
tattle tape). I would be most grateful
to hear from other librarians who already purchase shelf ready books and
can briefly describe their
work flow and interaction with the vendor. Any helpful tips or comments
would be appreciated.
