Subject: Publisher question regarding dustjackets and library practices
Dear Folks,
A specialty museum who has pre-ordered several copies one of our upcoming
titles has just let us know the following:
Prior to ca. 1997 or so we retained dustjackets and actually put additional
covers over the book covers. These were costly and we had to have
additional
(volunteer) staff to do the preparation work. The volume of new items
was simply
too great to keep up with the flow of material.
I understand your concern about the lost information but I can assure
you that
many libraries discard the covers when they add books to their collections.
Yikes! How true is this statement, "many libraries discard the covers
when they
add books to their collections"?
Should we consider using lithocasebinding on future hardback titles with
strong
library potential? Are there other alternatives so that the library
books include
dustjacket information: endorsements, descriptions, notes on the author?
Thanks for your information and feedback.
