Subject: Whither Technical Services?
I have been asked to prepare a brief paper and presentation
summarizing current trends and developments in Technical
Services, and how a Technical Services department should best
respond.
I have a pretty good idea of what's going on in cataloguing
(outsourcing, outsourcing, outsourcing, and sometimes RDA),
but less so for Acquisitions, so I would like to hear what your
ideas are on this topic. It has been over 15 years since I
worked in an Acquisitions Department, and that was before I
received my M.S.L.S., so I'm a bit rusty in this area.
I am especially interested in hearing from people whose
departments have undergone a recent reorganization in which
some of the functions of Acquisitions or Cataloguing have
either been transferred from one department to the other, or
were integrated into a single work unit.
As I have an almost unsurpassed talent for offending people,
no matter how otherwise innocuous my message seems to me, or
however innocent my intentions, I will apologize in advance,
and say that I did not mean for you to interpret it that way.
Thank you for your help.
