Subject: Another Business Directory Scam (now on CD-Rom)
At the University of Vermont we have received two unsolicited CDROMs over
the last two years from a suspicious source. I wonder if any other
library received similar products.
The first CDROM arrived in 9/25/2005 from a company called International
Data Services.
The CDROM is called "the Official Business Directory Cd Rom. This was
immediately
suspicious based on the following:
1.The P.O. was not ours. In fact it bore the name of our bookkeeper and
not
the person who usually orders materials.
2.We had no order in our system.
3.There was no telephone number on the invoice.
We took no action on the invoice and have held the item aside.
The second CDROM arrived via Amazon 12/19/2006. This item is called
"U.S. Internet Business Directory CDROM". This time the company is
called Business Directory
Services. This time there is a telephone number. When I've called, a
recording answered saying
that I had reached "corporate offices". The recording neglected to say
the corporate offices of
which company. Needless to say, my phone calls were not returned.
I am writing to see if others have received what appears to be a scam.
I guess that
whoever is sending these out assumes that as the invoice comes in, it
will be paid automatically.
Both companies are located in Florida.
