I agree about Powell's, they do a great job. We have done a lot of 
business with them.

As for Charles' original question, I would definitely go direct 
if requested to do so by a seller whom I know to be good.  My reason 
is that Alibris charges the bookseller fees, and we all know how 
unpleasant that is, but they also charge libraries a 20% premium which 
I personally find outrageous. Plus there is no room for negotiation with 
Alibris; hence, Alibris is always my last choice.  

Powell's and ABE is where I look first.  Elephant Books and Harvest are also
good booksellers with plenty of variety and reasonable prices.

I would rather pay an independent seller a little more than give Alibris
that 20%.
