in bibliographic records

I think we have something coming up at ALA Midwinter to address this
issue. As Chair of ALCTS Pre-Order Pre-Catalog Search Discussion Group,
I am working with Vice Chair Bob Schatz, Coutts Library Services, to
develop Series Searching as our topic for January. We may address these
other acquisitions activities that Lisa (Lent) mentions as well. We are
hoping to have a panel with representatives from Library of Congress,
OCLC, a materials vendor, as well as a two library representives.
Ideally we would like for the library representatives to come from
institutions with different levels of cataloging resources (i.e. a
smaller library and a larger library), assuming that this factor would
influence the different strategies in response to LC's series treatment
decisions.

So, this is an informal announcement of our ALA intentions, as well as a
request for interested parties to serve as one of two library
representatives on this panel--please contact me if you would like to
participate. A properly formatted announcement will be forthcoming, but
our panel meets on Monday, January 22, from 1:30-3:30.

Among my UC colleagues, we find that the impact to date in acquisitions
is minimal, but that might change over the next few months as
the changes in cataloging practices and elsewhere become evident in our
searching.

Lisa

Have any libraries experienced any impacts in acquisitions from
LC's decision to cease providing controlled series access in bibliographic
records and creating and maintaining series authority records: e.g.,
approval profiles that duplicate existing standing orders; new series
standing orders; claiming missing volumes in a series; tracking title
changes within a series, etc.?

Would anyone be willing to share any procedures or documentation that
you have put into place to address lack of series access and series
authority records from LC?
