1. Don't be afraid to spend money ( sometimes big money). It is part of
the job.
2. Get a colleague to mentor you if possible.
3. Try to establish relationship with the faculty ( in academia) they
can be very helpful
4. Go to meetings, audit classes, read faculty webpages, anything to get
an idea of where things are heading in a field
5. Learn to use technology well. Electronic sources can be helpful and
time-saving
6. Don't be afraid of a new subject
7. Compare yourself to other places (especially big long-standing
libraries) to see what they do and how they collect.

Subject: Advice for Newbies in Acquisitions Work
Dear colleagues
In preparation for a Pre-Conference at Charleston, I would like to receive
comments from others in the field regarding tips, pointers, advice, etc.
that you would share with newbies. What information do you think
would be most valuable to those now joining our ranks as acquisitions
librarians?
Please respond off list and I will provide a summary if there is interest
from others.
Thanks.
Janet
