I have been asked this question before and was unable to find
any kind offormula.

I am interested in hearing if there is a formula.

Sorry it's taken so long to respond, but I had to go back
into my files to find what I knew I had tucked away.

If you go back to _American Libraries_, for Dec., 1989,
p.1063, you will find in the "Action Exchange" a series of
Q & A describing budget allocation formulae. In AL, v, 21,
no. 1, January 1990, there is a continuation of that exchange.
I also have an article from the Journal
of Academic Librarianship, vol. 21, no. 1, January, 1995 entitled
"Library Materials Fund Allocation: A Case Study" by Max E. Graf
Eckbrecht von Durckheim-Montmartin et al. They worked at the
Univ. of Stellenbosch in South Africa.

I've always hung on to these pieces because once in a while, this
question comes up again. While these formulae were clearly developed
before electronic information became our mantra, they still have value
and whether you accept the formulae or tweak them or decide they are not
for you, they still have useful ideas about what factors need to be
considered.

Anyway, I suggest you have a look at them and perhaps they'll help your
thinking.

I've been searching for a "quick" formula for determining the value
of a collection for insurance purposes. I did search the archives and
didn't find anything recent.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm especially looking for values
for an academic law library. Thanks.

Janet
