There are a number of vendors that provide approval plans for Latin
American Materials - most are in country. Most will work with either book
approvals or send you catalogs broken down by subject. A few have searchable
web sites (e.g. Latbook) some can supply "slips." including in electronic form
(e.g. Puvill Mexico). You might want to start with this web site to identify
some of the ones that are out there:
http://www.library.cornell.edu/colldev/salalmlibreroswww.html
A few that we have used over the years include Garcia Cambeiro (Argentina, Brazil,
and other countries), MACH (Mexico), Puvill Mexico, Luis Retta (Uruguay and other
southern cone), Libros Andinos, Libros Centroamericanos. Two U.S.-based vendors we
have used with great success are Latin American Bookstore in Ithaca, NY and Latin
American Book Source in Chula Visa, CA.
SALALM, the Seminar on Latin American Library Materials is an excellent organization
whose members include vendors and librarians - all of whom can give you excellent
advice on working with vendors of Latin American materials.
You can find more about them at www.salalm.org
Good luck.

We are very happy with Karno Books in California
(http://www.karnobooks.com).
We have several approval profiles with them for Latin American
materials, including
specialized plans for art and cinema.

Hope this helps.

How about Latin American Book Store in Ithaca, NY? We've had an
approval-book plan with them for a long time; maybe they'll do
slip-only plans as well.
Best,

Hello,
The University of Texas Libraries has approval plans with the following
Latin American vendors.
Argueta, Mario R. (Honduras)
Atlantis Livros (Brazil)
Berenguer, L. Herta (Chile)
Books From Mexico (Mexico)
Cambeiro, Fernando Garcia (Argentina and Brazil)
Libros Andinos (formerly Editorial Inca; Bolivia, Ecuador, Venezuela)
Iturriaga y Cia (Peru)
Libreria Comuneros (Paraguay)
Libros Centroamericanos (Costa Rica, Guatemala, Belize and Nicaragua)
Libros de Colombia (Colombia)
Linardi y Risso (Uruguay)

In some cases our Latin American bibliographer also makes selections via

Forwarded message from Gayle Williams <gwillia_at_emory.edu>:
We use The Latin American Book Store, Ithaca NY, and Susan Bach Books,
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as our 2 approval plans. LABS only handles
Spanish language imprints from Latin America while Susan Bach covers
Brazil.
In neither case do they send me slips to choose books. We have subject
profiles with each and they use these to spend out their annual
allocations. Both send me electronic files of upcoming shipments so I
can see what we're getting and I can request that they add particular
titles in their shipments when I want to be sure we get them. A couple
of other vendors located in Spain that do provide slips with approval
plans are Puvill and Verlag Vervuert (he hangs out between Germany and
Spain) but both mark up prices on Latin American books. I have been
very happy with LABS and Susan Bach Books. They are probably flexible
about setting up an approval plan at different fund allocations. Our
Bach plan is a very modest one when one considers the true bulk of
Brazilian publishing.
LABS can be reached at libros_at_latinamericanbooks.com, or 607-273-2418;
Susan Bach Books (they know English!) at sbach_at_sbachbooks.com.br
I assume you'll forward this to the original author. She can also feel
free to contact me directly with any other questions. Gayle

Fellow Acqnetters,
Do any of you have an approval slip plan established with a reliable
vendor for books from Latin America? My library is looking to get one
set up, fairly quickly, and I can't find anyone who seems to be doing
this. I can find lots of places where I can firm order books, but not
anywhere that does anything like an approval or especially a slip plan.
Any assistance anyone can provide would be most appreciated.
Thanks!
Marlene
