Subject: Bib Records for AV Materials--Summary of Responses

Hello,

Thank you for the input. It was very helpful to me. One person asked me to
share all responses with the list. The posted question, followed by the
four replies, follows:

My original post:

"Perhaps not directly Acq related, but...

Is anyone out there using a vendor to download short records for
audiovisual materials into their automation system? Our public library
consortium members want to be able to circulate this popular material
immediately, without having to wait for a full MARC record to appear in the
system. If you are downloading short records for av, as we already do for
books, what vendor and/or publications are you using, and how successful
is the process?"

Responses:

1. Midwest Tape provides free brief MARC records to their customers that
are easily downloaded and usually very good, particularly on feature
films. In fact, our catalogers sometimes prefer their brief MARC records
to the more complete OCLC records. Their phone # is 800-875-2785. Their
rep for the eastern US is Eric Timm.

2. We are getting short records for free from Midwest Tapes. We use these
as on-order records and allow people to start placing holds on them as
soon as they are in the catalog.

3. Ambassador provides brief bibs for non-print materials for us. They
aren't full MARC records, but if all you need is something in your system
to get the item on the shelf, it'll work until it can get fully cataloged.

4. We download brief MARC records from our vendor at the time of order:
Midwest Tape for video; B&T for spoken word audio; BWI for music cd. Brief
are free from Midwest and BWI. With B&T, we have a (paid) subscription to
TitleSource, so technically, they are not free. Many of them are also
full, not brief.

Thanks again everyone.
