Subject: RE - Does Floating Collection Equal Centralized Purchasing?
We are a multi-branch library with a floating collection. When we
instituted the floating collection, our selection activity was fully
decentralized, and remained so until recently. As time has progressed,
we have slowly centralized some of the selection work. I would not say
the two activities are incompatible, but, for us, the combination did
give rise to inefficiencies.
If you would like to discuss this, Brigida, please feel free to call.

Subject: Does Floating Collection Equal Centralized Purchasing?
Hello folks,
At the moment, all of the articles and anecdotes on floating
collections mention that the purchasing is centralized.
Does anyone know of [or work in] a mostly decentralized library
that also floats its collection?
I can't quite see that a scenario like that would be very
successful - but I am very open to new/different viewpoints on the
matter.
Our library is very decentralized, and I am wondering if any
discussion on floating the collection has to have a concurrent
discussion on centralizing the purchasing to some degree.
Thank you all,
Brigida Campos, Librarian III
