This question concerns retrospective work on Hakluyt Society publications.
The Hakluyt Society bibliography (1996) is on their Web site
<http://www.hakluyt.com/hak-soc-bibliography.htm>. The site also
lists a limited number of volumes (out of 355 plus published) that are
still available.
My question is this, has anyone in recent memory in either Acquisitions
or through a Special Collections unit tried to acquire most/all of these
pubs? If so, was it done through an agent? My estimate in fishing
around on Alibris, ABE and eBay is that an average price will be
about $150.00 per volume and a set would run in excess of $50,000.
Is print-on-demand the only sensible alternative?
We acquired volumes on an ad hoc basis over the last 110 years,
some donated. We never could afford a standing order, which I
believe is the only shot at acquiring works published from 1846 to date.
This question is slightly stupid, but any responses will furnish
documentation. We're assembling data for Foundation monies
wish lists, by the way.
