I am a librarian for a private high school, as well as library chair. Our
students range from Pre-K 3 through 12th grade and pay an annual
tuition. It was our principals and headmaster who determined that we
may charge for the cost of item replacement, but nothing more for
processing, etc. It's the "cost of doing business," according to
administration.
Hope this information helps.
Sincerely,

Please share the replies you receive with the list.
Currently at our library, we determine the charge by using the
purchase price if one has been entered into the record. If there's
not a purchase price available, we have some "default" prices that
are used, depending on the type of material in question. For years
I have, without success, tried to make the case for charging the
purchase price (if known) plus some kind of a factor that covers all of
the extra work incurred. Perhaps the responses you receive will help
me finally make my case.
Good luck!

Good morning - this is our policy at the University of Windsor Leddy
Library. If the student does not want or cannot replace the book we
charge a $90.00 flat fee. Students who can replace it using the same
ISBN only pay for the cost of the replacement book.
I hope this help. Thanks.

At Triton we charge only $7.50 per volume which is probably
unrealistically low, but we are a community college with a fairly low
income clientelle, so we try to keep changes down.
Hope you are recovering from your hideous flood, although I suppose
it will take years.
Best.

I am head of Technical Services for Okanagan Regional Library, a public
library system in British Columbia, Canada, serving 29 branches and
serving a population of 326,000.
Our processing costs vary:
Books: adult reference and nonfiction: $10.00
adult fiction and junior books: $5.00
CDs, DVDs, jr kits $5.00
We also add a bindery cost of $10.00 if the books need to be bound by
a local bindery (trade paper and rebinds).
These fees are more of a restocking fee, rather than actual cost to our
library, with the exception of the binding fee-- that one is pretty well
cost recovery.
We have had fire and flood damage to items over the years, as well as
insurance claims for customers when items are left in cars which are stolen.
These are the fees we quote insurance companies over and above the
replacement costs of the items, as well as fees charged our customers.
Sincerely,
Paula Trout

Subject: Desperately Seeking Processing Costs
When a book is damaged beyond repair by a patron (or a flood), what cost
do you assign to processing the replacement to make it shelf ready?
In other words, in addition to the cost of the book, what do you charge
for processing? Searching the Internet, I have found processing charges
ranging from $10.00 to $400.00.
When you respond it would be helpful to me if you identify your
institution/library. For your help, I thank you very much.
