Like many who have responded, I did not have Acquisitions in mind
when I was completing my studies at library school at the University
of Toronto. Instead, I saw myself wanting to go towards the special
library setting. However, that changed when I had a summer
appointment at the National Library of Canada's Legal Deposit Office
in Hull, Quebec in the Music Division, which altered my way of
thinking. Though my first jobs were in the public service realm
(first a public library in Queens, NY and then health sciences at
Nova Southeastern University's Health Profession Division), I finally
became fully involved in acquisitions at the University of Miami,
where I was the electronic resources librarian for five years,
working with great people both on the acquisitions and collection
development end. In that capacity, I negotiated licenses, maintained
e-resource payments, was the liaison with vendors for tech support
issues, etc. I have now moved onto the print side at Nova
Southeastern University, thus completing all aspects of the
acquisitions spectrum.

I agree with the sentiments that as long as there are orders to be
filled, whether they be electronic or print (there will always be
print!), acquisitions-minded librarians will always be needed to see
that the material is bought and budgets administered.

I suspect that many of us in acquisitions are, like me,
paraprofessionals. I came to both libraries and acquisitions by
accident. I just needed a job and my dual major in music and
communications weren't particularly helpful. I ended up typing and
filing orders in acquisitions (this was obviously a bazillion years
ago - remember having to type in the vendor and purchase order
number for every single firm order title?)

Although I work primarily with state documents now, I think my
acquisitions background has been a good foundation. For instance,
coordinating a depository program is, in some ways, like being a
specialized jobber.

Of course, I think most acquisitions people have to admit that one
of the best things about acquisitions is that you have an excuse to
look at all the new books:-)

Hello Colleagues,

Over the years, I have gotten the impression that most of us did not
start our librarian careers with the idea of being acquisitions
librarians. I became interested in acquisitions because my first
SLIS-student job was as a firm order clerk. I would be curious to
know if most acquisitions librarians took a similar route, or if most
of us "inherited" our positions because "someone had to do it?"
Thank you for your comments.

Sincerely,
