After receiving my MLS, I began working in this library as a
classified staff person. When the Collection Development/Acquisitions
Librarian (my boss) left, I applied for and received the position.
Although I did not have any prior professional library experience,
I'd worked as an accountant for 12 years before going to library
school, and that background has been a valuable asset to me and to
my library during the past 9-1/2 years.

[Editor's Note: Missouri Bibliographic Information User System
(MOBIUS) is a consortium of academic libraries in Missouri.]

My path into acquisitions followed similar paths as all of the rest
Of the respondents. Twelve years ago I was hired as the catalog
Librarian at a fledgling community college. One of my charges was
to set up the acquisitions department. The education that I received
in this area was via colleagues and attending seminars sponsored by
ALCTS. Eventually, the acquisitions responsibilities eclipsed the
cataloging responsibilities. I really did enjoy the work.

Recently, I've taken new employment as a trainer with our statewide
academic consortium. What do I train? Acquisitions.

I'm now officially worried. I'm a recent (very recent) grad of
library school and did an internship at an academic library focused
on acquisitions and loved it. I've been applying for acquisition
librarian openings, but after reading these posts I'm concerned.
I've gone about it all wrong! Maybe the direct approach doesn't work.
Do I need to disguise my acquisitions aspirations to get my foot in
the door? By announcing my intentions outright are search committees
automatically slapping a PSYCH RISK label on my application? I
appeal to the collective wisdom of the ACQNET for some reassurance
that my chosen career path is accessible to one such as me.
Facetiously (sort of).

Hello Colleagues,

Over the years, I have gotten the impression that most of us did not
start our librarian careers with the idea of being acquisitions
librarians. I became interested in acquisitions because my first
SLIS-student job was as a firm order clerk. I would be curious to
know if most acquisitions librarians took a similar route, or if most
of us "inherited" our positions because "someone had to do it?"
Thank you for your comments.

Sincerely,

Patrick M. Bickers
