Hello Colleagues,

I did not have Acquisitions in mind because it was not emphasised in
my programme of studies. In other words, there wasn't a specific
course that dealt with the intricacies of Acquisitions. I ended up
here because this is the section of the library that had a vacancy.

Best regards,

What a fun question! I moved to Boston to attend the GSLIS at
Simmons hoping to work in an Archives some day, as I'd been a student
archivist at my undergrad college and loved it! However, I had a
hard time finding an archives-related job so I took a job as an Order
Assistant in the Acquisitions Dept. at Boston Public Library.
Shortly thereafter, they created a Pre-Professional position for me
in the Department and I continued in the department in various
positions for 12 years before moving to Northeastern as Head of
Acquisitions 11 years ago! How time flies when you're having fun!
(I'm with Terri-Leigh on that "shopping with someone else's money"
thing - it's great!)

Don't let the title below fool you. I'm still doing Acquisitions, but now
"only" for electronic and media formats!

Actually, I have always been in acquisitions, and it's been a long
and happy career. I started out as support staff doing
Acquisitions, while going to undergrad college and library school
for my master's. Then, I went to a Medical Library to work for 4 yrs.
Went to work for a library vendor after that, doing approval plan
profiling. Then, a corporate library, and finally ended up in a Law
Library. I've worked with various computer systems after first doing
it all manually with a typewriter. I've seen publishers merge like
an old PacMan game. I've seen price increases to turn my hair grey.
I am a cataloger and a systems person, as well as serials, collection
development and acquisitions. Many hats, one head. As long as
there are budgets to manage and bills to pay, we'll still be around.

Hello Colleagues,

Over the years, I have gotten the impression that most of us did not
start our librarian careers with the idea of being acquisitions
librarians. I became interested in acquisitions because my first
SLIS-student job was as a firm order clerk. I would be curious to
know if most acquisitions librarians took a similar route, or if most
of us "inherited" our positions because "someone had to do it?"
Thank you for your comments.

Sincerely,
