How we got started in Acquisitions? I was a Middle East subject
Specialist for 8 years, responsible for reference; outreach and
liaison to the teaching faculty; a reading room; original monograph
and serial cataloging in Arabic, Persian, and Turkish; supervision
of a copy cataloger; and collection development. Of those duties, I
enjoyed collection development most, especially technical aspects
of acquiring materials, balancing budgets, and procedural changes
to save time and money.

When our monograph acquisitions position came open, I made the move.
With various title changes, I've done acquisitions work for 22 years.
It's a great field.

I started in subscriptions. Always I was interested in Commerce and
Finance. I have 25 years looking for materials in some languages from
Different countries. I like and enjoy my work like it was the first
day. I have had the opportunity to apply new technologies and I feel
very satisfied. Also, I think that I learn each day new knowledge
from professional literature, experiences, and colleagues like you.

Hello Colleagues,

Over the years, I have gotten the impression that most of us did not
start our librarian careers with the idea of being acquisitions
librarians. I became interested in acquisitions because my first
SLIS-student job was as a firm order clerk. I would be curious to
know if most acquisitions librarians took a similar route, or if most
of us "inherited" our positions because "someone had to do it?"
Thank you for your comments.

Sincerely,

Patrick M. Bickers
