I "inherited" the position. I started, for the first time, in this
Library last August. We had a law librarian/director, a cataloger,
an acquisitions person, and then me. Last December, the law
librarian and the acquisitions person quit. I was promoted to
acquisitions while still carrying my previous workload. Last month
the cataloger was promoted to law librarian/director. We are still
two people short, but we are carrying on strong.
I do have a question. What kind of acquisition info do you collect
for statistical purposes?

I got my Associates Degree in Library Science (yes, they once
existed) in 1978 from Green Mountain College in Vermont. The summer
I graduated, a friend from school wrote to me telling me that she had
landed one of the library assistant positions at the Dartmouth
College Library in Hanover, NH. I contacted Dartmouth figuring there
was another job opening, and was immediately interviewed for a
reserve/circ desk position and a position in acquisitions. Both
supervisors wanted me, but since the Acquisitions librarian had
seniority over the Circulation/Reserves librarian, she got me. I
worked there as a para-professional for 11 years, then left to get
my library degree at the U. of Kentucky (in the meantime I got my
BA at Vermont College). Then, I got the head of Acquisitions/Serials
at the U. of New Hampshire and stayed for 7 years. For the last
6 1/2 years I've have been here at Simmons College in Boston.
Acquisitions work suits me so well. I am incredibly detail oriented,
love to work with money & people especially faculty, and love to shop
(especially with someone else's money!). So who knows what would have
happened to me if I had ended up at the reserve/circulation desk.
In my humble opinion, I wish library schools spent as much time
talking up tech services positions as they do public services.
Students clearly have no idea how rewarding this line of work
can be. Thanks for asking.

Interesting question. I had no intention of being a librarian at
all. My mother persuaded me to get a minor in school librarianship
just in case I couldn't get a job teaching history. And, so it
passed that I went to get an MA in history and decided to stay in
East Lansing and the only job I could find was as a high school
librarian. I got pink-slipped after the first year because of budget
cuts and ended up as a librarian at a fledgling Christian college
nearby where I did everything. I got hooked and went to library
school. The acquisitions part came because it was the job I got at
Auburn - first as Gifts and Exchange Librarian, then as Order
Librarian, now as head of Acquisitions. (Wow! I can't believe I
could get my whole career in one short paragraph.)

I was hired into acquisitions as a library assistant for a corporate
library. Got my degree, one year in reference, straight back to
acquisitions as soon as I could.

Hello Colleagues,
Over the years, I have gotten the impression that most of us did not
start our librarian careers with the idea of being acquisitions
librarians. I became interested in acquisitions because my first
SLIS-student job was as a firm order clerk. I would be curious to
know if most acquisitions librarians took a similar route, or if most
of us "inherited" our positions because "someone had to do it?"
Thank you for your comments.
Sincerely,
