We developed a rather rudimentary set of procedures a couple of years
ago when we started getting requests for title-by-title e-books. I have
attached it.

Ebook Ordering Procedures For Individual Titles:
Order comes to Acquisitions

A. Verify information as usual.
B. Call publisher
 1. Is access through the publisher or do we need to mount it
    locally?
 2. If we are to access it at their site, handle the same way Paula
    handles electronic journals.
 3. Are there licensing restrictions? If so, show to Paula.
 4. Do they take purchase orders or do we need to pay by credit
    card?
 5. Is it also available in print? If so, discuss with Collection
    manager which format to purchase.
C. Place order
 1. If not on OCLC, do provisional record using correct format for
ebook. (We need to have a template for an ebook provisional
     record.)
 2. If we are getting access at a remote site, follow procedures
Paula uses for electronic serial notification.
 3. If we are getting a physical piece that has a file to mount
locally, do an Internal line item note saying to send piece to
    Dana Caudle on arrival.
D. Cataloging
 1. Dana will load the item into a file to be housed in a place to
be prearranged with Robert and Beth.
 2. She will also need to do an electronic backup of the file.
 3. She will catalog the physical piece as well as the electronic
piece. The physical piece can be housed in the stacks under a
call number. Physical Processing can prepare a box for it.

Subject: ACQNET: Work Flows for Title by Title Purchase of E-books
Colleagues:

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who is acquiring e-books on a
title-by-title basis (not in conjunction with packages or approval
plans). I am interested in what issues you have addressed and what
work flows you have developed for the acquisitions, processing, and
access to these titles.

Thank you in advance for any advice you can provide.
