Hi,
We load Serials Solutions (SS) records directly into the catalogue.
Previously our electronic holdings where listed in an alphabetical
list accessible from the Library web page.
SS records are loaded around every 2 months. The only problem is
with duplicated LCCNs. The ILS we use is VIRTUA (VTLS). If LCCNs
are duplicated in records, it throws the most recently loaded bib
record (the SS one) into "error stat", from where it cannot be read
from the main catalogue. This is something that cannot be changed
in the load options or from our accessible parameters.
Our solution has been to delete the LCCN from our catalogue records,
as this control number is little used to search on (if at all) here
in Australia. Heresy once.
This is so the SS records do not have to be changed every 2 months.
There are quite a few error records. The pre-existing records in the
catalogue are from prior held print serials now duplicated in
electronic format.
Otherwise, the cataloguing on Serials Solutions records is of a
fairly high standard, occasionally they use a \x instead of \v for
the periodicals subfield in the subject headings, but that's a fairly
minor issue with them.
Loading SS records direct into the library catalog makes all holdings
searchable from the one interface - the library catalogue - including
from both corporate name and subject access side. SS records in the
catalog make better use of that existing major investment and make it
quicker for the user to locate all information from the one search
interface, the library system. The fewer things to search the better,
as academic users say they are always strapped for time.
Hope this makes sense. If you want more info please e-mail me.

Subject: Order Records and Serials Solutions
We have begun loading Serials Solutions records into
our online catalog for electronic journal titles but hesitate
to put order records on the Serials Solutions bibliographic records
for a variety of reasons. On the other hand, we don't need two
bibliographic records in the OPAC for the same electronic title,
especially since in many cases, we still have a record for the
periodical in paper format. While we could suppress a second
non-Serials Solutions record in our public catalog or put the
electronic order on the paper record, this makes searching for
duplicate paid subscriptions more difficult.
If you have worked through this situation, particularly with the
Innovative Interfaces system, and have suggestions or solutions,
please call or e-mail me.
