Subject: Keeping track of scams
[Ed. note: Corey and I have been corresponding about this for a couple
of months. There is
already a good list available at the Washington University of St. Louis
- see: http://purchasing.wustl.edu/purchasing/purchasing.nsf
Then click on "Buyer Alert" on the left side, under Purchasing
services. Please note that this
link has been advertised in ACQNET in the past and is available from the
ACQNET archives -
if people think another list is needed, contact Corey]
I have not done anything with this yet, but I had thought of setting up
a blog to maintain an listing of
these scams. We were hit with one at the University of Toledo and it
had not been for a network outage
the day they first called, we might have been suckered in. Colleagues
were able to identify the company
as a scam and we were able to have the ammunition to fight back. I
think having a blog to record these
types of scams might prove useful. Since they keep the most recent
entries on the front page, it would
be rather timely for people to view. Eleanor rightfully points out
the need to have standards and to keep
the entries from being slanderous. Still, we have decreasing budgets
and the last thing we need is to
lose $400.
Any thoughts on the blog idea? They are easy to setup. I have one for
the profession
(library writing opportunities) and one for my son's cub scouts pack.
Sorry, I reserve my rambling
thoughts for email!
Best -- Corey
