Subject: Recap on question about core journals

A few weeks ago I posted a question on core journals. Thanks to all who
responded. I was asked by three or four individuals to post the
information I received. So here is a summary of the replies.

It is a topic that has interest. Two individuals requested that an
article be written.

   1. There are several different processes being used, the only
processes that were noted more than once were Katz's Magazines for
Libraries, citation reports and input from the teaching faculty.
   2. Some specific disciplines have a core list or a list that is being
used as a core list, i.e. Most Cited Legal Periodicals.
   3. Ulrich's Serials Analysis system
   4. Local use
   5. Holdings at benchmark institutions

<>At Northern Kentucky University we have also looked at what is
required by accrediting agencies

Subject: Core list of journal titles

Hi,

I would like to post the following on the list:

We are trying to determine a core list of journals for our collection.
These would be journals that we would not cut in times of budget cuts.
Has anyone developed a core list? If so, I am interested in what
criteria was used in selecting the titles, how it was accepted by the
teaching faculty, and how well is it working?
