Dear Colleagues:
We subscribe to 6 journals published by Transaction Publishers. They
are: American sociologist, East Asia, Journal of American ethnic
history, Journal of labor research, Review of black political
economy, and Society. Up to now the six subscriptions (paper and
"free" online) have cost a total of $992 annually. Transaction has
adopted a new pricing structure that charges (more) for the paper
version and for the hitherto "free" online version or a new price for
both. The net effect is that, to get the same product, we will have
to spend $1335 annually. This is a 35% increase, which I regard
as close to price gouging. I have cancelled four of them and renewed
Journal of American ethnic history and Society after consulting with
faculty in Social Sciences. I would have liked to cancel them all as
a stand against this type of practice.
