RE: Selecting a primary vendor

Kathy,

First of all, keep in mind that none of them are perfect.

We're a small college library and we use Ebsco. I'm very happy with
them, like the format of the invoices. I use the online EbscoNet for
claiming. They also have a Missing Copy Bank that you can search and
order missing copies. But, as others have said before on the SERIALST
listserv on this topic, it all boils down to the customer service rep
that you get; we have Jenny Buzbee and she is wonderful.

You need to check out the SERIALST archives as this was discussed not
long ago. http://list.uvm.edu/archives/serialst.html
You can search the archives.

The only thing I don't like is the way Ebsco handles standing orders; we
cancelled almost all of ours with them years ago. They're just too rigid
and it's too hard to cancel titles. We tend to deal directly with
publishers on standing orders anyway, have very few through other book
vendors.

Hope this helps, and good luck.

Allison

Our county school system is considering using a primary
vendor to order all school library books (64 schools k-12).
We are interested in hearing the pros and cons of primary
vendors.
