Subject: RE - Business Directory Scams
I, too, was foolish enough to be caught up in a scam by a directory
company a few years ago and have been continually haunted by them
with requests for "updates." I usually ask them for a purchase order
number, and when they cannot produce one, I reply, sorry, I cannot
engage in any transaction unless they can quote me a purchase order.
Here is a new wrinkle. Last week one of the "directory" companies
(sorry, I do not remember the name) phoned me and announced that
they would be closing our account. They then initiated the usual
"verification"
of our address, etc. Before I confirmed anything, I asked if there would be
a "charge" to remove our name. They said, yes, there would be a charge,
at which point I told them I could no longer participate in the
conversation.
I regret that I did not ask what the price was, but I was way too livid
at the
time to be coherent.
