Subject: Business Directory Scams: Newline & MNC
I've had a couple of business directory companies contact me lately,
and I've seen other folks having problems with them. These two are
a little unusual and I find them rather aggravating, so I thought I'd
post a warning.
So far I've had Newline and Multinational Corporation contact me.
I was foolish enough to buy a directory from Newline 5 years ago, but I
told them at that time to cancel all orders, subscriptions, and whatnot.
Now they are insisting that I owe them around $300 to finish paying for
the listing I supposedly ordered 5 years ago. I hadn't seen that
trick before.
I believe Multinational Corporation is MNC Publications, which has a
reputation among libraries for dishonesty. They started out by "apologizing" that the directory I "ordered" last year was late in shipping. I told them at that point that we hadn't ordered any directories in years and the contact said she'd look into it.
I thought their introduction was quite smooth, and might slip by
library staff.
Both companies have unsatisfactory records with the Better Business
Bureau. MNC also has an evident tendency to send unpaid invoices to
collection agencies.
It might just be me, but these things seem to come in waves. Now is
a good time to be wary.
