Have you checked what they sell for on www.bookfinder.com?

I would be very careful about doing this at all--the IRS does not allow
the recipient of gifts to assign a tax deductible value to those gifts.
Doing this for a donor could mean that his/her effort to take a tax
donation would be denied because the university had a conflict of
interest in assigning the value.

Hope this helps. I would encourage the university advancement office
to refer the donor to a web site or a back issue periodicals dealer for
valuation.

Good luck.

Hi folks. Thank you all for your speedy replies to my query for
University Advancement regarding the fair market value on a run of Life,
ISSN: 0024-3019 donated to our library.

I tried to push the law into their faces but was informed that University
Advancement is well aware of federal law (thankyouverymuch) and that
there have in fact been changes to California law that I was unaware.
Over here in the library we're not too sure what UA wants with this
information but I've been assured that the estimate will not be reported
to the IRS nor to the donor.

The figures we are reporting are between $2.55 and $5 for single issues.
We also stated that some issues considered "collectors" issues are more
expensive individually. The eBay average cost of runs is in the $100.00
range. When we use the ProQuest cost for the run on microform and take
one-fifth that, we derive the same ballpark figure as the per issue cost
multiplied by issues a year and volumes in run.

We recommend to University Advancement that in future, quires for valuation
can be sent to: Absolute Backorder Service at
http://www.absolute-inc.com/_/services/appraisals.html Alfred Jaeger, Inc.
at http://www.ajaeger.com/pages/appraisals.html

Thank you all again. Now I can get back to getting prepared for fiscal
year close!
