We are an undergraduate college of about 4000 students - but we are
situated in a larger university setting, so some of our figures
might be a bit skewed.
We recently ran a couple of reports to find out what was being used
vs. what was being purchased in a few LC classes. For history we
determined that we were only spending 14% of our budget, but about
20% of circulation was concentrated in this subject area. I hope this
is of some assistance to at least give you a ballpark figure.

We do not allocate by subject area per se. Instead, we base our
calculations on the number of part-time and full-time faculty in each
department or school. We have found that this is the fairest way to
distribute funds. Solves lots of political problems as well.
We are a private, Catholic master's II with @4100 FTE in undergrad and
grad.

Tony,
We are a private religious university with an enrollment of
about 1,500 students. I use a formula to allocate our book
budget among 15 academic departments. Formula factors include
student course hours, course level, library use, and average
book costs. The formula is recalculated about every 3 years to
adjust for changes in the curriculum and book prices. Using
this formula, we are currently allocating 4.23% of the budget
for the History Department. Our History Department also
includes sociology and anthropology. Hope this info is helpful.
