Mykie,
I prefer to consolidate standing orders with a vendor, such as
Blackwell's Book Services or
Yankee Book Peddler, rather than having them through various publishers
because of all these
advantages: I get routine scheduled shipments in boxes labeled as
standing orders so it
goes to the right person processing the standing orders without sorting
the mail. Depending
on your library system and vendor, you might be able to electronically
load invoices. Also
when you have standing orders from a vendor, if you have your approval
plan with the same
vendor, they will automatically block duplicates of standing orders
coming on the approval
nd will do the same for firm orders if you use that same vendor. If
your selectors/bibliographers
are using that vendor's system for approval management or firm ordering,
they also can see
the standing order info. You might get a slightly bigger discount on
each title by ordering direct
with Gale, but won't have the advantages I've listed and I consider the
higher price well worth the
value of the vendor services in savings of processing and management time.
You can also set up a deposit account with the vendors if you really
don't want to pay by the
piece. This has nothing to do with Gale or BBS or YBP in particular,
but just in general,
some institutions are leery of paying in advance or setting up deposit
accounts if not necessary --
especially after RoweCom went bankrupt and libraries lost millions of
prepaid dollars.

Hi there,
I'm thinking of switching to a proforma invoice w/Gale, which is our entire
year's worth of business paid all at once, instead of paying an invoices
each
time a standing order piece comes in. The person I talked to said that the
benefits are that the price is locked in and that the shipping is free. It
would also be a good time saver for my staff person who pays the invoices.
I was wondering if anybody had any feelings for/against Gale proformas
verses single invoices.
Thanks,
Mykie Howard
