To switch into "Acquisitions" I'd suggest that you brush up on your
cataloging background. When you work closely with cataloging and
ordering it is helpful to understand the nuts and bolts of cataloging.

The answer in my mind is more complex. Do you have extensive
background in negotiation, large budget experience and strong accounting
skills? I am in my first year at an academic environment. I got my MLIS
after a career in private industry for 25 years. I had modest experience in
the above areas working for fortune 100 or 500 companies, and found that
the job has been more than I enjoy because of the emphasis on accounting
and appropriating funds for faculty liaisons. Systems can be overwhelming
to learn if you have some of the large character based programs. If you
remain in public libraries, depending on size, I think you'd be fine
regardless since people are usually more humane than in the academic
setting. I did acquisitions in a small public with about 4 full time
degreed librarians and enjoyed the civility. Serials acquisitions is an
area of need, but beware of what is going on and why so many libraries have
openings in that area. Hope this helps, I have concluded I enjoy Reference
and Instruction more than Acquisitions and hope to make that move soon.
