Subject: Linking to National Academies Press Books Online

When I saw the initial e-mail re. linking to NAP titles, I e-mailed NAP to
see
what their feelings were on this because I have many links to their titles
in
our catalog. Here is the response:

Good afternoon Ms. Brueck,

First of all I would like to thank you for inquiring. I am thinking the
links you're providing are links to the catalog pages already available to
the public through our website. If you could give me an example of a
couple,
I could verify that. If it is what I suspect, it should not be a problem.
These aren't actual PDF files where the entire book can be downloaded. The
individual pages can be printed from a PDF of that single page, but you can
not "download" an entire chapter or book in a single "click". The only
exception would be for the few titles out there that have full PDF's
available for free.

What would probably be a concern to us is if an actual downloadable
PDF file that was purchased was made available to the public or your
university
environment. We do sell the full PDFs with "Terms and Conditions" for use.
There are restrictions to the sharing and use of those files. Below is a
section from our site.
-------------------------------
Copyright Issues

May I share my PDF with others? No. All of the content on the Web site is
copyrighted. You may print single copies in PDF format of the online
publications solely for your personal noncommercial use. Substantial or
systematic reproduction is not permitted. Distributing or posting the PDF
files is strictly prohibited without written permission of the NAP. Each
page
of the PDF carries the copyright statement and a tracking number that is
specific to each downloaded PDF file. Please see Terms of Use for the
National Academies Press Electronic Publications.
