Subject: RE - Dust-jacket Vendors / Information on Intercontinental
Promotions
Hello Lorna (and anyone else who may have a similar question),
I have dealt with two similar vendors, West Circle Books and Best Books
--
both sell deep-discount current books, especially from small,
specialized
presses. Their method is bringing dust jackets of their current
offerings.
Here's how it works:
1. First off, be prepared to spend some time, this is NOT a very
quick
process.
2. You go through the dust jackets and indicate the ones you're
interested in (just put them in a "want" pile).
3. If you have several subject experts (in your case, specific
aspects
within theology), try to get as many of them in on this appointment. I
try
to do this because with this sort of selecting, the more pairs of eyes,
the
better.
4. Based on the titles you select this way, the vendor creates a
list
of titles you're interested in, either by hand or by scanning in the
dust-jacket barcode (depending on how technically sophisticate the
vendor's
"titles of interest gathering" is).
5. Next, the vendor sends you a list of the titles you've expressed
interest in.
6. You can then check the list against your library holdings so you
don't order something you already have. (this is more efficient than
trying to check each title as you're going through book jackets because
it
prolongs the process -- unless you have support personnel readily
available
for this task right then)
7. From there, you cross off any that you already have and don't
need
in duplicate.
8. The list of titles minus the crossed-off ones constitutes your
order.
9. You send the order.
10. The vendor ships the books, along with the invoice comprised of
the
titles on your revised "book jacket list".
In general, the "dust jacket avenue" is a very
"reaction-to-random-supply"
method of collection development. It is meaningful if you already have
a
curriculum-addressing collection-development method in place, because in
that scenario you have a feel where gaps are and can tell whether a
certain
book would meaningfully address an unfilled niche or not.
Quirks:
1. It is possible that the vendor will run out of the book and can
then no longer supply it at the originally presented discount.
2. It is possible that the vendor will leave some books out of the
invoiced shipment (by some glitch), which can generate more
invoice-processing and shipment-chasing work.
3. It is possible that the vendor will supply things that you
crossed
out.
That said, I haven't dealt with Intercontinental Promotions, but their
method sounds very similar to that of Best Books and West Circle Books.
Hope this helps.
Best,

Hello all,
We are a small theological library. We've been approached by a William
Indigaro from Intercontinental Promotions. Apparently he sells
remainders, review copies and overstocks, with a speciality in some
theological publishers.
He says he will arrive with a briefcase of dust jackets, from which we
can make a selection and he will then reserve copies for us. It sounds
unusual to me, to say the least.
Has anyone dealt with this company or person, or have you had dealings
with a similar company?
