Subject: Exporting survey summary
A number of people have asked for a summary of the results of the
exporting at point of order survey that I did. I'm providing numbers
here but no analysis. Some of the numbers, especially related to reasons
why people do and don't export at the point of order, are quite
interesting and puzzle me a little:
I received 74 responses:
66% (49) indicated that they export at the point of order.
34% (25) indicated that they don't export at the point of order.
Breakdown by size of operation:
Libraries purchasing less than 1,000 books per year: 7, 4 export, 3
don't
Libraries purchasing 1,000-5,000 books per year: 19, 13 export, 6 don't
Libraries purchasing 5,000-10,000 books per year: 12, 7 export, 5 don't
Libraries purchasing 20,000-50,000 books per year: 15, 10 export, 5
don't
Libraries purchasing 50,000+ books per year: 6, 3 export, 3 don't
Dept. exporting at point of order:
75% (38) indicate that Acquisitions exports at point of order
10% (5) indicate that Cataloging exports at the point of order
16% (8) indicate a combination of Acquisitions/Cataloging
Cataloging method:
77% (37) catalog in their local system
23% (11) catalog on OCLC
Error rate:
7.6% average error rate reported.
5.9% with outlying responses of 0%, 0%, 40%, and 50% discarded.
Reasons for exporting:
55% Acquisitions efficiency
47% Cataloging efficiency
24% Quality of order information
20% Access
15% Quality of bibliographic records
14% Service
11% OCLC Cost
3% Error rate
1% Never considered
Reasons for not exporting:
44% OCLC costs
28% Acquisitions efficiency
28% Cataloging efficiency
20% Error rate
16% Never considered exporting
8% Quality of order information
4% Quality of bibliographic records
4% Other
0% Service
