Subject: It's been a weird summer!
Dear ACQNET-L Subscribers:
It’s been a weird summer. Every now and then, we have an odd season here
in
the mountains of N.C. that we call the “summer that wasn’t.” While other
parts
of the U.S. have been parched, we have been drowning in rainstorms and
damp
conditions. You preservationists don’t want to hear what the humidity %
is in my
library right now.
Meanwhile, technical challenges have been plaguing many of us, no matter
what
the weather outside.
ACQNET temporarily lost its archives in June 2003, but we had assurances
from
our archives master, Eric Lease Morgan, that we would get them back. We
do now –
but only due to Eric’s perseverance. While he was trying to rebuild our
archives on
his web site, Appalachian State was experiencing all kinds of server
stresses and
failures- more than usual, to say the least,
August has been a nightmare for many of us – the Blaster, Nachi, and
other worms
and viruses have wrecked havoc on our computing systems and brought us
to our knees.
We decided that considering all this, ACQNET could coast for awhile. I
wasn’t even
sure if we could post ACQNET during this crisis and decided we did not
need
to worry about it.
SO – I hope you all get the flurry of postings from mid-July through the
end of August
I am sending today!
Happy Labor Day and thanks for your patience,
Eleanor Cook
