We only notify the requester when asked to do so. We check the notify
section of the order record and cataloging gives the item special handling
and then calls the requester.
It seems to me that you already go out of your way with ways requesters can
find out if their items have arrived. Notifying each requester is more work
than our already overworked staff has time for.

In my library, we have one personal who generally selects books etc.,
my collection development colleague. So we have few who request books on
top of his selections. Because of this, I make a note in the order record
for any book selected by someone other than him. When it arrives I send them
an email, with the bib info pasted onto the page. If they want it rushed,
they can place a hold now that it's loaded. Btw, we use Sirsi Unicorn.

My library uses the PALS library system, which offers a "Requested by"
field to be completed in the acquisitions record if desired. I always
put someone's name in the field, including mine if I am the selector.
Usually in this case, I will also put a professor or department in the
field to let them know.
Five days after the book has been processed, the system notifies me
of what books are available and who requested them. I then forward
the titles to the appropriate people by e-mail.
(I just copy and paste the titles.)
In response to who in the library notifies the person, well,
that's me. I am the technical services librarian, so I am in charge
of cataloging, acquisitions, serials, and collection development.
I hope this helps!

Here at Oxy, professors are notified as requested; not for every title
they have suggested/requested for purchase. And yes, we too have a new
titles web page as well as a New Books display in the library. As for
who notifies them and by what means, since I perform all monograph
processing for the library (ordering, receiving, invoice payment, etc.),
I also notify professors via e-mail of title arrival. This is another
wonderful way to keep an open line of communication with faculty.
You would be surprised at some of the responses: "Please check-out for
me and send via campus mail" or "Place on the hold shelf for me." I do
neither. I supply author, title, publisher, and call number information
to them (easily copied from the computer screen), adding that the work can
be found on the new book shelf in "x" number of days.
I hope this information is helpful. I too am curious as to how other
handle these requests.
Cheers,
Marla E. Peppers

We also use Innovative and we use the same procedure with the order
record that Carmel described in her original message.
As for our notification workflow, we place holds only on new requests
when specifically requested. We have one individual who implicitly
wants to be notified about every requested item's checkout-readiness,
so with that individual we place holds on every requested items except
where the requestor says "no need to notify." Since placing holds on
each title is time-consuming, it seems the best use of time to do this
only where there is specific need. On a library-system side note:
If you want the system capability to do this automatically, have you
considered filling out a software enhancement request form on the iiiusers
site?
As for the workflow, we in Acquisitions place the hold, and Circulation
notifies the hold-requestor. The notices are send via campus mail.
If the item is a rush, Circulation phones the requestor.
As for new arrivals in general, we use iii featured lists for (a) the
most recently completed month's worth of new arrivals and (b) a running
list of the current fiscal year's new arrivals up to the most recently
completed month. These are linked to our library web-page. In addition,
we also run customized new-arrivals lists and other analyses for specific
needs that crop up such as accreditation visits, collection analysis work
with the departmental library liaison etc, which is quite easy to with
Innovative.
We look to provide as much meaningful "items available" information as
possible, and we also let people around the campus know that we're accessible
to give them any customized notification they might require.
Hope this helps.
Best,
Antje

Subject: Requester notification
Hello,
I would like to know if other academic libraries notify professors
when orders they have requested have arrived. These "Notify" alerts
are not the same as Holds (item is held for patron checkout at
Circulation Desk) and Reserves (item is placed on class reserve).
This is just a notice that the item the professor requested the
library purchase has arrived.
Does your academic library notify professors? If so, are they notified
on every book or just as requested? Who within your organization
notifies the selector: Acquisitions, Cataloging, Circulation, Liaison
Librarian? What method is used to notify them: phone call, email,
paper slip?
Our library uses Innovative which does not have a function for doing
this automatically. Although, we do utilize the order record fields
available to alert the receiver to process the Notify. We also have a
"What's New In The Library" list and an academic title list of orders
processed, both available on web pages.
When responding to the list, please also cc me on your message,
