Why on earth would you need the PO number on the serial itself. If the
number is recorded on the order record, or checkin record that should be
enough for any auditor. I cannot imagine an auditor going to the shelves
to make sure a certain item came on a certain PO number. Especially if
the items are not shelved according to PO number!?!
Just my .02 cents worth.

Mykie,
It seems if there is a computer record that "reveals" the PO and the
serial title, why would you need to put it on the book itself? The PO
number is necessary to pay for the serial, find the file with past
invoices, etc., but this would be at the Acquisitions/Receiving end
of it. When we receive a serial (or invoice for prepayment) in the mail,
the PO is not always on the invoice. Sometimes the item title is
abbreviated on an invoice. But you can usually search the
catalog/acquisitions records to link your title/PO/payment records.
Seldom would you go to the library shelves to verify or find a PO #
from the cataloged volumes themselves. Sometimes Acquisitions and
the library collection are not even in the same building.
It seems pointless to me. There may have been a reason in the way-past,
but if you can see no reason for it now, perhaps it is time to drop the
ritual practice. Just my thoughts.

The only reason I can think of is that, in case the volume is later
discovered to have a problem (missing pages or something), the PO number
with enable you to track back the purchasing information to get a
replacement. But this can be done by other means, and I can't think of
why it would apply only to hardbound serials. If no one can give you a
VALID reason why this is so necessary, by all means eliminate it.

Subject: Purchase Order number on the inside of Serials
Does anyone out there write the PO number on the verso of hardbound
serials
(what we call added volumes) every time they are checked in? If so,
why?
This wasn't done in my previous library, but it is done where I work
now.
I'm wondering if this step can be skipped to reduce processing time. The
answer I'm finding from the people I work with is that "it's always been
done that way."
Thanks,
Mykie
