Subject: Possible scam vendor -- National Infotech Directory (NIC)

Hi, everyone --

I've recently had an interesting exchange with the publishers of the
National Infotech Directory, and wonder whether others have been
hearing from them as well. My interaction leads me to suspect that
they're running a typical directory scam -- in this case, publishing
a directory and sending it out to libraries at no charge, then invoicing
the library (to the tune of several hundred dollars) for a subsequent
edition. The guy I spoke with couldn't cite a purchase order number,
but promised to fax me evidence of an order on our part. Not
surprisingly, he never did so.

If someone from NIC can clarify the company's sales practices for the
benefit of our readers, that would be very welcome. In the meantime,
this is just one more company to be on lookout for. I've instructed
my staff to bring any invoices from from this company directly to me.
