Subject: Entry into Acquisitions

[Ed. Note: What a refreshing inquery! I applaud this individual for her
interest.
Please reply with your thoughts - all you acquisitions experts]

I am a librarian who graduated with a MLIS from Simmon's College last
year.
I have just finished a contract job developing, assessing and
maintaining a
collection of child passenger safety materials for a special project.
Prior
to this experience, I worked at Draper Lab library as a library
assistant.
I have done a variety of tasks including developing a new Intranet
service
to streamline MIT library card applications and processing materials
using
the OCLC ILL system. Now that I am searching for my next opportunity, I
am
exploring work as an acquisitions or technical librarian at an academic

institution. I am concerned that my background may be too general for an

entry level position in acquisitions or collection development. I am
wondering :

What kind of experience or training is necessary for someone with a
library
degree and general experience to get into acquisitions?

What is the ideal acquisitions librarian?

Any insight will be appreciated. Thank you.

Michelle
