Subject: Heads-up re: International Business Directories
We've just received another call from International Business
Directories, asking us to "confirm our shipping address for FedEx" so
that they could send us the new National Zip Code Directory. When I
asked them to cite a PO number, they couldn't. When I asked the price,
they said $350. When I asked why on earth we would pay $350 for
information that is freely and easily available online, they hung up.
We're all familiar with this scam, but I thought I'd send out a quick
heads-up because this is the time of year when IBD seems to become
especially active. I've sent a note to the entire library staff here
reminding them that anytime a publisher calls up asking us to "confirm
our shipping address," the call should be forwarded to myself or the
Acquisitions Supervisor. IBD is notorious for calling departments other
than Acquisitions (this morning's call came to Circulation), in hopes
that the person who answers the phone will think nothing of simply
confirming the library's address. Everyone in our organizations,
not just the Acq and Serials folks, needs to be on the alert.
