Subject: Aggressive telemarketeers & unsolicited materials
Greetings,
Because of an extremely aggressive & threatening telemarketer
call, we're putting together a 'statement' for our acquisitions
people to use to counteract claims that the library is responsible
for all materials sent to it. We already have an unwritten
policy, but now need to codify it.
I am aware of the 39 U.S.C. code 3009 and of the Michigan code which
is related to unsolicited materials. I have Marsha L. Baum's article
"Unsolicited Merchandise: Gift or Sale?" _Library Acquisitions:
Practice & Theory_, v.20, no.5 p.301-309, 1996) and will be using
these resources to create our written procedure.
My question: do any of you have policies you'd be willing to share?
I'd be happy to share what I put together with the rest of you and
would love further suggestions as to what to include. Our document
will include what to say & how to respond to the cold
call tactics used by some of the publishers. Thanks in advance,
