[Ed. note: Rick, being a Moderator of ACQNET, forgot his omnipotent
powers and posted this reply direct to the list last week. Unfortunately,
when he forgets and does this, it does not get archived because it is
not formatted correctly. So - I am posting this again so it gets
properly archived - our apologies for the duplication]
Neither Altavista nor Google has heard of Statewide CD Publications; I
strongly suggest you simply throw the fax away and pretend you never saw it.
However, if the product sound interesting to you, you can always go to the
website, check it out, and decide whether you want to purchase access. If
the website requires you to enter a credit card number in order to get in,
get out and throw away the invoice. If it requires you to fill out a form
with billing information, make sure you read all the fine print before doing
so -- if filling out the information constitutes confirming the order, get
out and throw away the invoice. If you can get into the site without any
such nonsense and find that you like it and wish to order, then treat the
fax like a pro forma invoice. But I'd proceed very cautiously -- this does
indeed sound like a scam.
